Congratulations, Laura.

The School of Medical Sciences is pleased to announce that Professor Laura Bennet from the department of physiology has been elected as a fellow of the academy of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS). The IUPS represents more than 60 physiological societies worldwide promoting the discipline of physiology in research and teaching; emphasizing its relevance to medicine and global health, and supporting a communication platform that allows international exchange between scientists and scientific societies.

The IUPS fellows are elected based on their exceptional contributions to physiological sciences through significant original discoveries and sustained excellent contributions to scholarship and recognises Laura’s research in perinatal physiology and her roles in mentoring and teaching. The IUPS Fellows provide advice and facilitate the development of strategies that assist the IUPS deliver benefits of the international physiological community as well as IUPS activities and projects. It will be great to have a Kiwi voice within the academy to help ensure ongoing global recognition of the work of New Zealand scientists. The award comes in addition to Laura’s recent election into Ngā Ahurei a Te Apārangi, Fellowship of Royal Society Te Apārangi, and her appointment to the role of deputy Editor in Chief of the Journal of Physiology.
