In June, Heidi Bowmast travelled to Vila Central Hospital in Vanuatu as a RAD-AID South Pacific volunteer to support the implementation and training of local medical imaging technologists on the island’s first mammography unit and vacuum-assisted biopsy system.  This initiative represents a significant advancement in breast health services, enabling earlier and more accurate detection of breast cancer and reducing delays in diagnosis.

Previously, patients often had to travel to New Caledonia for mammography or have ultrasound then undergo biopsies in theatre.  The new mammography and biopsy equipment, donated by the Japanese government and installed by Fuji, was introduced alongside a structured training programme. This combined morning theoretical sessions with afternoon hands-on practice using live patients.

In collaboration with local specialists, we developed key documentation and clinical protocols to streamline the referral pathway, optimize workflow, and improve access for symptomatic, high-risk, and eventually screening populations. This initiative not only builds local capacity but also delivers lasting benefits to the community—saving time, reducing costs, and ultimately, saving lives.
