The Biomedical Science Honours Symposium took place on Tuesday, 22 October 2024, featuring a day of research presentations by students in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) program. This event celebrated the efforts and achievements of students in this research-led postgraduate degree.
Twenty-three students presented their work, and the judges all agreeing the presentations were of a very high standard. Dr Matire Harwood, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences addressed the students and awarded prizes to Trinity Ayers, Jamie Hyde, Evelyn Jade and Greer Pugh for their outstanding presentations.
Trinity Ayers is from the School of Medical Sciences work involves ‘Characterising Radiation-Induced Pathology in Normal Brain Tissue’ and she is supervised by Dr Thomas Park, Professor Johanna Montgomery, and Professor Mike Dragunow.
Jamie Hyde is from the School of Biological Sciences. His presentation was titled ‘Huntington’s disease as a whole-body syndrome? Investigating molecular mechanisms of liver pathogenesis in Huntington’s disease’. He is supervised by Dr Renee Handley, Professor Russell Snell and Dr Andrew Jiang.
Evelyn Jade is from the School of Biological Sciences. She is supervised by Dr Emma Scotter and Dr Nicole Edwards. Her project involves investigating the ‘Genetics of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease and other NOTCH2NLC-related repeat expansion disorders in Aotearoa New Zealand Māori families’.
Greer Pugh is from the School of Medical Sciences and working on ‘Understanding standing: Exploring vascular properties in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)’. Greer is supervised by Associate Professor James Fisher and Dr Mickey Fan.
