The School of Medical Sciences Careers Evening “Opportunities, 2020”, was held on Wednesday 30th September, 6pm – 8pm. This year, the event was hosted as a webinar due to Covid restrictions and aimed to inspire students, create a positive atmosphere, and excite them to grab opportunities. The evening commenced with a welcome from Head of School Professor Paul Donaldson, along with an introduction to postgraduate pathways by both Academic Director Professor Clare Wall and Postgraduate Director (acting) Associate Professor Debbie Young. Following this, our invited keynote speaker, alumna Dr Angela Lim, took to the stage recounting her journey leading to where she is today.
Dr Angela Lim is a Paediatrics Doctor turned CEO and co-founder of Clearhead – New Zealand’s first AI-driven diagnostic and triage platform for mental health and wellbeing. She believes that technology has the potential to deliver the transformative change required to improve health outcomes. Clearhead aims to improve mental health access by providing choice, convenience and control directly to the user. An overview on how to draft an effective CV and job opportunities with employability services was given by Liz Barry, CDES.
Organised by Professional Teaching Fellow, Anuj Bhargava, and Q&A facilitated by Angela Tsai, the event was a resounding success. The event was well attended with an audience of 130 guests, staff, and students on Zoom webinar and live streamed and viewed by 155 guests. Feedback collated from an anonymous form indicated: overwhelming gratitude to the organiser; increased clarity in career pathways; increased sense of belonging to the School of Medical Sciences, and holistically improved motivation to complete their studies; amongst other glowing reviews.
The organising team wish to sincerely thank all the staff, guests, and students involved in creating an amazing night for our valued students!
