Dr Jacelyn Loh from the Department of Molecular Medicine and Pathology, has been awarded a prestigious National Heart Foundation Senior Research Fellowship which will support her research into vaccine development against Group A Streptococcus for the next 3 years. Dr Loh says the vaccine would target Strep A infections, such as those that cause a sore throat or skin infection and, if untreated, can lead to acute rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart disease, permanent heart damage and premature death.
Dr Yukti Vyas from the Department of Physiology, was awarded the Best Poster Presentation Award at the recent Association for the Study of Neurons and Disease meeting in Queenstown for her poster entitled ‘High maternal zinc diet prevents autism-associated behaviours in Shank3 knockout mice’. This international meeting was hosted by New Zealand for the first time, and included attendees from the USA, Canada, Korea, UK, and Japan.
