Professor Julian Paton, Director of Manaaki Manawa, from the Department of Physiology, is leading attempts to develop a revolutionary new heart valve and improve the lives of children with rheumatic heart disease. Given the shortages of biomedical research funding currently he did a charity drive from Dunedin to Auckland in a 77 year old Land Rover to raise funds for this innovative valve project (see Drive4Hearts)

The Specialist 

Professor Julian Paton, Director of Manaaki Manawa, from the Department of Physiology and Founder member and Chief Scientific Officer for Ceryx Medical Ltd, is heading up a multi-disciplinary international research team generating a new type of cardiac pacemaker. After 15 years of research, the pacemaker has now gone into a first-in-human trial in New Zealand.

The story was published in The Specialist (the magazine of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists) and entitled – ‘Setting a new pace for medical research in New Zealand.’ March 2025 pp30-32.
