Dr Hamid Abbassi is a Research Fellow at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, Department of Physiology and the Centre for Brain Research at the University of Auckland. He is also the co-founder and CEO of Neurofanos, a New Zealand grown high-tech company focused on developing an advanced technology to improve precision in neurosurgery.
As a senior machine learning expert, Hamid has a profound interest in developing AI-powered healthcare solutions to enhance patient care and clinical practice. His collaboration with the fetal neuroscience team on “Advancing clinical translation: AI-driven detection and monitoring of neonatal EEG seizures post Hypoxia-Ischemia Encephalopathy” was submitted to SUMMIT 2024. This has led to an agreement with Starship Hospital to validate the algorithms on a large multi-center international trial that New Zealand is part of.
The significant advancement showcases the superior performance, efficiency and robustness of state-of-the-art AI models for generalised identification of clinically translatable post-HI stereotypic EEG seizures, irrespective of the perinatal brain maturation stage and the influence of hypothermia, offering potential improvements for seizure detection after HI in newborns, at the cot side.
