Congratulations to Dr Kim Mellor (PI), Dr Lea Delbridge, Dr Gus Grey and Associate Professor Troy Merry from the Department of Physiology for receiving a Marsden grant! Their project is titled ‘Fructose flux in the heart: discovering hidden pathways of cardiac sugar toxicity’.
They will use biochemical, physiological, and state-of-the-art imaging methods to track how fructose is metabolised in diabetic hearts.
It is hoped that the findings from their study will further our understanding of cardiac metabolism, potentially leading to novel treatments for diabetic heart disease. Given the current prevalence of metabolic and cardiac disease, this project may have important health and economic impacts in Aotearoa/New Zealand and the rest of the world.
