Associate Professor Siouxsie Wiles who has received a Health Research Council (HRC) Explorer Grant ($150,000, 2yrs), ‘Sewers for Superbug Surveillance’. With the help of Dr Sam Trowsdale in the School of Environment in the Faculty of Science and Professor Cris Print, this study will delve into Auckland’s sewer network to quantify and map levels of antibiotic resistance bacteria in the community. It will involve sampling hospital effluent and comparing it to samples from wastewater treatment plants serving ‘healthy’ communities without a primary care facility in the catchment area.
