After nearly half a century of service to the University of Auckland, Hilary Holloway has retired from her position in the Biomedical Imaging Research Unit (BIRU). Hilary came to NZ in January 1970 and worked as a Research Technician with Dr Denis Boshier until March 1973. She left to travel through South America and returned to New Zealand in June 1974. On her return, Professor John Carman offered her a position as a Departmental Technician with both departmental and research duties. After a number of years as Technical Manager and electron microscopy specialist, Hilary joined Dr Colin Green in the BIRU as a founding member.
Since then, she has supported many students and researchers in her specialist areas of electron and light microscopy, and helped the BIRU grow to the model core facility it is today. While she has departed with our warmest wishes, her enthusiasm, professionalism and knowledge will be sorely missed. Unfortunately we were unable to formally recognise and celebrate Hilary’s extraordinary contribution to the University prior to her retirement. In the coming months we will invite Hilary back to mark her retirement, so look out for the announcement.
While we have lost Hilary’s wealth of expertise, all BIRU equipment remains fully supported by the team, so don’t hesitate to get in touch for your imaging requirements.
