We are delighted to announce that the winner of the BIRU image trophy and confocal microscopy category for 2018 is Shelly Lin from the Department of Physiology. Shelly had a beautiful projection image of spiral ganglion neurons from the cochlea.

The Electron Microscopy category was carried off by Cath Gray from Anatomical Pathology, LabPlus with her striking Tiki Butterflyl (an unmyelinated axon in a nerve specimen). Annika Winbo from the Department of Physiology and Paediatric Cardiology/ADHB won the Light microscopy category with a lovely “Moonscape” of human sympathetic neurons derived from induced pluripotent stem cells while a team from Ophthalmology (Catherine Tian, Salim Ismail, Jane McGhee and Trevor Sherwin) woed the judges with their movie entitled “Battle of the Sexes”, which shows live imaging of corneal stem-cell enriched spheres derived from male and female donors competing.

You can see all of the winning images and movie here.

Due to the very high standard of entries this year, we also have a number of highly commended awards and special mentions you’ll see why when you see them.

Thanks very much to all of those who participated this year. Photos from our research celebration event are also available for viewing here. I have to say that I think the members of the BIRU are better at taking images with microscopes!
