Postgraduate Publication Assistance Funding

The School of Medical Sciences actively supports its students and in particular those completing PhD study. SMS will twice yearly (June and December) review applications from supervisors of PhD students who will be submitting theses within the following six months and for whom supervisors request SMS PBRF funding to assist publication/writing of papers.

Please note the following is now the University’s official policy on the use of PBRF funds to support students.

  1. The fund is not to be used for postgraduate student fees, stipends or scholarships.
  2. Doctoral candidates who have submitted their thesis may be employed with PBRF funds to produce research outputs co-authored by one or more PBRF-eligible University staff members. This employment should be recorded as “publication assistance”. The student must have a formal employment agreement with the University paid through the University payroll and subject to the appropriate PAYE (tax) deductions.

In addition the following conditions apply to the SMS Programme:

  • Following submission of thesis, Doctoral students may be employed by supervisors to write up papers.
  • School of Medical Sciences PBRF funding will only support PhD students submitting their thesis within the 4 year preferred timeframe. Evidence of PhD submission from the graduate office will be required.
  • School of Medical Sciences PBRF funding to PhD students may not exceed $5000 and may not be for a period in excess of three (3) months (equivalent to 0.25 FTE for 3 months @ approximately $75k).
  • The employment of Doctoral candidates following PhD submission, will follow normal recruitment processes managed by Group Services.  Please contact Virginia Moraes, Group Services Coordinator (email moraes@auckland.ac.nz)
